The Mercedes-AMG hypercar is being worked on. The star brand’s most powerful street car is presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
It was announced months ago that AMG will be releasing a hypercar in 2018. Thomas Weber, Head of Research and Development at Mercedes, confirmed the project at the Paris Motor Show in September last year. The managing director said the Mercedes-AMG hypercar will carry the drive technology of the brand’s Formula 1 vehicles.
It should be noted that Mercedes’ F1 car houses a 1.6-liter hybrid turbo engine. The device is set so that the hypercar is approved for road traffic. It is expected to deliver up to 1,000 horsepower.
Autocar reported that AMG boss Tobias Moers also confirmed the development of their hypercar during the Detroit Auto Show. He called it “Project One”.
Aside from the engine specs mentioned above, he stated that the hypercar will have an all-wheel drive system with an electrically powered front axle similar to the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive. Then the car’s electric motor can cover a distance of up to 25 km.
In addition, he pointed out that the production of the hypercar will only be limited to 300 units with a price of around EUR 2 million. The car is expected to reach buyers in mid-2018.
On the other hand, Daimler boss Dr. Dieter Zetsche the hypercar as the “ultimate sports car”. He said it would be the first street legal car with an F1 engine.
The earlier sketch of the hypercar suggests that it may be a mid-engine. A teaser of the car was also revealed by AMG, which can be seen above.
