New details about the engine of the Mercedes-AMG Project One hypercar has just been released by its manufacturer. As already reported, the car will be presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show this year.
According to engineProject One will take on Aston Martin Valkyrie. Tobias Moers, CEO of AMG, claimed the car will be the first street legal car to sport a Formula 1 engine.
The AMG hypercar will be equipped with a 1.6-liter V6 turbo engine that is matched to electric motors. Each front wheel has an electric motor with an output of 120 kW. There is also a 100 kW electric motor on the crankshaft and an 80 kW electric motor for faster turbocharger response. The electric motors in the front wheels use 100 kg lithium-ion batteries with four times the storage capacity of F1 vehicles. In combination with the electric motors, the petrol engine has an output of up to 735 kW or 1,000 hp.
The source noted that Project One’s electric range will likely only be around 25 km. The electric motors are mainly used to charge the turbocharger.
Another disadvantage of the F1 V6 engine is that it requires regular maintenance every 50,000 km. That is why it is recommended that buyers of the car get this additional guarantee Package offered by AMG.
Only 300 samples of the Mercedes-AMG Project One are sold on the market. The article claimed that the first 275 copies of the Hypercar will be delivered to customers in 2019.
