It is the dream of most of us: to bring our favorite Mercedes to Germany so that we can let go of everything on the autobahn. The high-speed paradise has several sections where you can deal with the limit. Even the least likely Benzes can develop their full potential on these long journeys. including the GLS 580.
Outside a certain unlimited section of the highway, our mysterious driver goes to the GLS 580. As indicated in the infographic, the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 puts out 489 horses and 516 lb-ft of torque. All of this goes via a nine-speed car to the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system, which reaches 100 km / h in 5.3 seconds. The top speed is 250 km / h, quite a lot for the large luxury SUV. It is certainly a dream to do this on our highways. Let’s see what the driver can do in his home country.
Once you exit the merge lane, the GLS 580 is off and running. The throaty V8 sounds amazing as the driver never lifts the gas pedal. With every shift of the car, the revs go up and down with every mile. In just a few seconds, the large SUV is already at 124 mph, just a few miles per hour from the top. Can the driver reach the top before having to slow down due to the traffic?
Sure enough, if the driver drives past a truck on the left, they will reach top speed and a few more. Instead of 155 mph that GLS 580 Maximum at 159 mph. Drawing the big rig probably helped put those extra miles per hour on the speedometer. There was more on tap, however.
At the next run the GLS 580 shot past its published top speed and shot down the freeway at 162 mph. This is a large SUV that can drive like a running back. And that’s before you step up to the AMG GLS 63, a Saturn V of a machine. Good to know you can burn it on the freeway if the mood is right.
